Clevedon Town FC have announced the establishment of a newly formed Women’s football team, writes Paul Buzzard.
The Seasiders’ Women’s team were elected to the Somerset County Women’s Football League at its AGM last week and the league season will begin in September.
The team will be managed by Kirsty Barrett who will be assisted by FA qualified and licensed coaches.
Barret and the rest of her management team have been busy arranging training sessions, friendly fixtures and signing players.
Manager Barrett said: “We are really excited by the opportunity of establishing a competitive Clevedon Town Women’s team.
“We have already started training and we’d love to hear from anybody who is interested in starting, returning, or continuing their football journey.”
To help with recruiting, summer training is already under way and the team held a competitive training session last Sunday when Sam Donaldson scored four goals as the Blues ran out 6-4 winners.
Winter training will held at the Everyone Active Hand Stadium on Fridays from 7:30 - 9:00pm and regular team members will also enjoy free Everyone Active Gym membership.
So far, five friendly fixtures have been arranged, with more likely to follow.
The current fixtures are: Home to Lydney Town on July 14th, home to Downend Flyers on July 21st, home to Paulton Development on July 28th, home to Portishead Town on August 28th, and away to Lydney Town on July 25th, with games usually kicking off at 2:00pm.
Manager Barrett said, “If you would like to get involved, please get in touch through email at: womens@clevedontownfc.co.uk or leave a message on 07748 842838.
We can promise a really friendly and encouraging environment and the best local training and match day facilities.”
The original competitive Clevedon Town Women’s Team was set up in 1990 and worked its way up to the South West Combination League in 1999/2000 when they won a cup double, including the Somerset County Women’s FA Cup.
The following season they amalgamated with South Bristol Wanderers to become Clevedon SBW when they ran three sides.
Manager Barrett said: “It would be great if anybody from those teams would like to come along to support us and share their experiences with us.”
