Revenge was sweet for Cleeve CC as they made amends for last Saturday’s league defeat to local rivals Claverham with a 14-run victory led by skipper Sam Williams’ unbeaten 117 runs in the Somerset Intermediate T20 Knockout Cup.
Williams' century came from 70 balls and comprised of fifteen 4s and three 6s including three boundaries in the last over, with Cleeve posting 186-2 at the end of their innings.
Cleeve elected to make first use of their superb home track and James Ball opened the batting with captain Williams
From the off they despatched any bad balls as Williams reached 50 at the end of the 11th over at 77-0.
The scoring rate continued to accelerate as Ball finally fell to Watts for 28 in the 15th, putting Cleeve at 126-1 and bringing in the exciting, unorthodox batting style of third batsman Joe Hance.
He quickly and Williams ran well, with Hance executing his legendary reverse sweep/scoop to earn yet another Cleeve boundary.
Williams reached his century in the 19th off just 63 deliveries as Hance departed adjudged LBW for a quick 22, as Williams hit his last minute boundaries to end with Cleeve on 186-2.
Cleeve knew they had to bowl and field well on such a great wicket, with Clav requiring over nine runs an over some tight early overs would be required.
Andy Barnsley, 1-27 from four overs, took Clav's first wicket in the second over to put the visitors at 15-1 early on.
Jahal Ahmed, two overs 1-20, then removed Watts through a Ball catch in the 9th, putting Clav at 60-2 after 10 overs and looking well shy of their target.
Clav matched the run rate for the rest of the game until Spiers removed J Watts in the 18th and after 17 runs were taken off the 19th the game was on a knife edge, Clav needing 18 runs off the last over for victory.
However, sharp fielding from Will Grubb from the first ball, assisted by a slip from Copeland, secured a run out and a sigh of relief for the home team.
Spiers went on to castle Bird and Gamble in consecutive deliveries and then removed Vaughan via an Ahmed catch off the last ball of the game to end with 4-25 from three overs and give Cleeve victory by 14 runs.
Cleeve now go on to round three of the cup but have their next fixture in the league away to Hanham on Saturday.
