Clevedon Cricket Club's 1st team welcomed Wellington CC to North Somerset this weekend and won by 64 runs to claim their first home win of the season.
Bayley Wiggins was Clevedon’s main man in the win as he led the team with an 81-run innings with bat in hand and followed the effort with a five-wicket haul with the ball.
Clevedon won the toss and elected to bat first in the perfect cricketing weather that has been missing during first month of the 2024 season.
Opener Nick Carpenter Brooks scored 57, Tyler Leaman scored 47, and John Bachelor added 30 to Wiggins’ 81 runs from 87 balls as the home side recorded a total of 280-6 from the full 50 overs.
After a solid batting innings Clevedon knew a good performance with the ball would bring them the win, and they delivered.
Matt Carpenter removed Wellington opener Ruell for one in the second over before the visiting team recovered and managed to stretch the tally to 33-2 and then 169-3.
However, Wiggins was on hand to reply to the increased run rate as he came on to take 5-50, including Wellington’s last wicket, to topple the visitors for 216 in the 48th over and give Clevedon the 64-run win.
Along with Wiggins’ five wickets Carpenter took 3-34, Tyler Leaman 1- 33, and Mark Bibbing 1-40.
Clevedon’s 2nd XI were also in action on Saturday as they travelled up the road to play local rivals Portishead but returned after a 20 run defeat despite a 5-35 performance from Fraser Caddick.
Clevedon bowled first and started off hot with Caddick taking four of his wickets in the first five overs to reduce Portishead to 13-4.
Portishead’s batters did manage to recover though as their middle order took them to 179-7 after the full 40 overs, with Jake Brand and Abin Roy adding the other wickets.
In reply Clevedon were unable to build any meaningful partnerships with the bat, losing wickets at consistent intervals to be bowled out in the 36th over, falling 20 runs short of the 179 target.
Dan Van Grudgings and Jacob Lillington were top scorers for Clevedon after both hitting 26.
Both teams will be in action next weekend as the 1st XI travel away to Congresbury whilst the 2nd XI host Lodway.
