Yet again, failings with the bat and too many extras cost Cleeve Cricket Club's 1st XI victory this weekend as they hosted local rivals Claverham. and lost by 22 runs.

The day started well with Cleeve’s skipper Sam Williams opting to field first and two balls later he pouched Claverham’s skipper James Copeland for no score to put the visitors at 0-1.

The delivery came from Andy Barnsley who took 1-34 from his seven overs.

However, Clav then settled adding 72 runs before Jahal Ahmed’s off-spin secured a brace removing Grant for a top score of 66 and Watts for 33 via catches from Mitch Want and Barnsley.

Sam Jervis and James Cole then had spells but without success, so it was the returning left arm pace from Jack Spiers that secured the next scalp removing Hadfield for six as Want held on for his second catch at 146-4.

Sharp work from James Ball removed Gamble, run out just four runs later, and then the wickets stared to tumble.

Vaughan was bowled by Connor Hance,1-24 from his nine overs; Joe Hance ran out Ashman for one, and then removed Kenny for four as Barnsley nabbed his second catch and Claverham finished their innings on 182-9.

Requiring a run rate of just above four an over, Cleeve were confident of the chase and after a solid start lost Ahmed for eight, with Williams following for two to take Cleeve to 53-2 in the 15th over.

Ball was stumped seven runs later for two as Spiers was caught behind for 22.

Connor Hance, 18 runs, and Barnsley, six, were adjudged LBW to the left arm seam of Hadfield at 106-7.

Jervis, 14, and Joe Hance, 30, threatened to turn the tide by adding another 34 runs to the total before Jervis snicked off to the keeper and Hance became the third member of the LBW club for Cleeve.

Tom Carpenter added 10 before holing out leaving Cole on one not out and Cleeve 22 runs short.

Not for the first time, extras were a big contribution to Cleeve’s loss, but they will have a chance for revenge the sides play each other again this Wednesday, but this time in the Somerset Cup.
