Nailsea and District Croquet Club opened their playing season for the summer of 2024 with the now-traditional charity one-ball competition.
Over the years club members have raised well over £1,000 for various national charities.
One-ball is a variation of the game of croquet where players only have one ball instead of two and is a hybrid between the two main types of the game: Association and Golf, making the game fun but still highly skilled.
This year the selected charity was the British Heart Foundation, so all the players were asked to wear at least one red item of clothing to match the charity and by the end of the day’s play £85 was donated.
Marcus Evans, who organised the event said, “Amazingly the rain stayed away for the day which helped everyone to enjoy a fun but competitive day on the lawns.”
The event was also a qualifier for the National Final, played at Surbiton on Sunday 5 May.
Nailsea’s champion this year was Paul Arbos, who gained several good wins against a range of other players and will now move on to the national competition.
