Chilcompton 9-1 Wrington Redhill
After back-to-back victories over the Easter weekend the visit to reigning league champions and current contenders, Chilcompton Sports, was always going to be a challenging task.
The home side reinforced by players usually competing at a higher level of football proved to be well organised and were in no mood to give any ground to their opponents.
It didn’t help that the usual settled defensive line had to be changed with both full backs being replaced and whilst Matt Walsh and Josh Pitt worked tirelessly, the latter’s move from midfield precluded his busy, industrious influence in the middle of the park.
Defending the sloping pitch for the first 15 minutes the team battled well to keep the foraging Chilcompton at bay until a bizarre goal gave them the opening advantage.
From way out on the right flank a hopeful cross from Jacob Brooks-Scully deceived everyone as the strong cross wind floated the ball into the top left corner with young goalkeeper Regan D’Arcy unable to keep the ball out.
Chilcompton then pressed more to take the game beyond Wrington Redhill who were trying hard to reach half time with minimal disadvantage hopefully to have some success later with the slope in their favour.
However, this was not to be as the hosts added a second on 25 minutes when following a good run and cross from Monty Burgess, Alfie Dix was on hand to find the net.
Two more goals were added within a minute of each other as Jed Parfitt met a cross from Ryan Allen at the back post and found the net and then Oliver Jones completed a solo run outpacing the defence and fired past D’Arcy for a 4-0 half time lead.
The second half saw Wrington Redhill try to salvage something from the game, and they did produce more chances going forwards but all the effort evaporated when after some pressure on Chilcompton’s defence two swift breaks on the left led to two more goals.
In the blink of an eye a further three goals were notched up extremely late in the game with energy levels wavering, although Harvey did manage to gain a consolation goal for Wrington as the game ended 9-1.
It is on to another game on Tuesday evening away to Keynsham Town Reserves, 7.30pm kick off, and then a six-game home run within the space of a fortnight.
Wrington will be looking for positive results in all these games in an effort to avoid the drop after only one season at the Premier division.
