With a home win and an away loss from earlier in the season the scene was set for a final winner takes-all match and both teams served up a fantastic festival of rugby that went all the way to the final play of the match
The first score of the game came from a turnover ball that was then kicked deep into the Yatwell half for a fifty twenty-two and from the following line-out St. Brendans moved the ball wide and at speed to go over in the corner.
The next ten minutes saw Yatwell carry the ball well, but any errors were punished by more great kicking of the ball back deep into their half as St. Brendans made the most of the conditions.
In turn some poor kicking by Yatwell when under pressure gifted the ball back to their guests and when this was coupled with several missed tackles on one of their big ball carriers St Brendans were able to add a second try.
A terrific driving maul from Yatwell set up prop Phil Clarke who charged through the defenders before popping it out to fullback Billy Taylor who had the strength and balance to twist his way through and score.
A few minutes later and St. Brendans added another from a well taken cross field kick-pass to their winger and then Yatwell were back on the attack again.
Kieran Thomas powered through the defenders before off-loading out of the tackle to no. 8 Ned Hill who had the strength and speed to go round the remaining defence and score.
With the end of the half approaching a great scrum in their own half followed by more straight running ended with Thomas who bounced off a couple of defenders before scoring to make it Yatwell 17 – St. Brendans 17 at the break.
After the break the teams went back and forth, trading two tries a piece with a handful of conversions that put the teams’ level at 29-29 with not long to go in the game.
The game was set for somebody to score a late winner, but that ultimately ended up going to St. Brendans.
A tap and go in the final minute was initially defended well by Yatwell, but good hands and quick ball movement saw the ball move wide and St. Brendans going over the line in the last act of the game to make it Yatwell 29 - St. Brendans 34.
