Firebrands 5ths 1 Clevedon Ladies 1
In the final league match before the winter break, Clevedon made the trip to Failand for the game against a Firebrands 5th XI.
The visitors were first to strike, when an alert Vicky Ford took advantage of indecision in the home defence to put Clevedon ahead. The home side settled and began to put pressure on the visiting defence but Libby Barzotelli, Laura Gillespie and Louise Wiseman were not giving much away, Lucy Pope battled away just behind the front line and Georgina Blackburn kept the home defenders busy.
Firebrands did however find a way through and late in the half got the equaliser.
After the break play was end to end, Christina Becker in the Clevedon goal pulled off a few smart saves, Kat O'Donovan was all over the pitch both defending and driving the team forward, the visitors applied the pressure and Maggie King and Hannah Becker getting good ball into the D.
Ford was unable to capitalise on a great chance and Julie O'Sullivan went close but the best chances fell to Blackburn who from a short corner rifled in a reverse stick shot which went agonisingly to close to giving Clevedon the lead. Despite the efforts of both teams the game ended at 1-1.
Clevedon are back in league action on January 14th when they will play their first game on the superb new hockey pitch at Clevedon School.
