The Post Office is close to re-opening a branch in Portishead.

The postal company revealed that it has a potential new postmaster but is waiting to agree on a premises.

The town has been without a branch since January 2023 after McColls in the High Street, where it was based, closed its doors.

The news comes as Post Office branches are at risk of closing across the country, including in Nailsea

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We are closer to re-opening a Post Office in Portishead.

“We have a suitable potential new postmaster, and we are now looking to agree premises.

“We hope to soon share more information as soon as matters are finalised.”

Since the Portishead branch closed last year, residents have since been forced to visit the Avonmouth Road Post Office in Bristol and the Baltic Place branch in Pill.

Jobs are at risk across the country as up to 115 Post Office branches could be closed as part of a radical shake-up of the business.

Nailsea residents could see their branch, which the North Somerset Times understands is a Directly Managed Branch (DMB), close its doors.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We are considering a range of options to reduce our central costs.

“This includes considering the future of our remaining Directly Managed Branches, which are loss-making.

“We have long held a publicly-stated ambition to move to a fully franchised network and we are in dialogue with the unions about future options for the DMBs.”
