Owners of a new North Somerset store have said they are “bowled over” by the response it has received since opening.

Melhuish & Morrow opened in Wrington on October 5, selling goods crafted by artisans using “time-honoured techniques”.

Positioning itself as an alternative to shops selling mass-produced goods, the furnishings, stationery, and gifts for those "who value thoughtfulness and quality over mass-produced convenience".

Caroline Holroyd, one of the owners of the store said: “Buffy and I have been bowled over by the wonderful response since opening the shop.

“Having lived and traded in the village for over ten years, we often discussed the need for an inspiring retail experience in furnishings and homewares locally.

“While online shopping offers convenience, many people increasingly seek meaningful connections to products and their stories.”

Caroline, an interior designer, opened the shop with co-owner Elizabeth ‘Buffy’ Buckman, who works as an upholsterer.

The two friends were inspired by their own grandmothers,  who came from a time when “quality was paramount”, and “every purchase was made with care”.

Caroline said that the benefits of selling goods made using traditional methods is it helps protect antiquated crafts that are often “overlooked”: “It’s not just us that benefit from the success of our business, all our independent artisans around the country are being supported in trades that have, at times, been overlooked, threatening these traditional crafts.

“However the market is changing and the future is looking brighter as we work together to preserve these skills.”
