North Somerset Council is backing a programme to help businesses bridge skills gaps.

Run by Weston College, the initiative aims to support employee development and provide training solutions for businesses of all sizes.

The programme offers consultations with businesses, including site visits if required, to understand specific training needs.

After assessing these, businesses can access a range of flexible training options.

These include directing employees to existing training resources, creating customised courses, or offering funding for certain training programmes.

Head of adult education projects at Weston College, Anna Carey, said: "We’re committed to providing practical results.

"Whether it’s fully funded mental health first aid courses or electric vehicle refresher training for vehicle technicians, we’re here to help.

"We also have funds to cover some training costs that aren’t typically funded."

Many businesses are already benefiting from the programme, with specialised customer service training, bootcamp-style courses, and one-on-one employee support across various industries.

Councillor Catherine Gibbons, deputy leader of North Somerset Council and executive member for children’s services, families, and lifelong learning, said: "This programme is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to access tailored training solutions that address specific needs.

"By investing in upskilling, we’re helping to secure a stronger future for North Somerset."

Councillor Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council’s executive member for placemaking and economy, added: "This is about more than just closing skills gaps – it’s about preparing our businesses and workforce for the future.

"By investing in employee training, we’re ensuring North Somerset remains competitive."

The initiative is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and is available until March 2025.
