A hugely successful Black History Month event took place at the Nailsea Tithe Barn.

Held on October 6, it was organised by Nailsea Town Council and Nailsea Folk Club.

It featured a performance by multi-instrumentalist Suntou Susso.

He is a kora player, percussionist, singer and composer from The Gambia.

Mr Suso had the audience dancing in the aisles, including North Somerset's new MP Sadik Al-Hassan.

The musician was born a Griot, a member of a 700-year-old tradition of oral historians.

His musical ability and charismatic stage presence have made him a sought-after performer.

The event was opened by David Francis, trustee of the Nailsea Tithe Barn Trust and runner of the Nailsea Folk Club.

The closing speech was delivered by Ian Noah from Race Equality North Somerset (RENS), a community charity advocating for social, racial, and cultural justice.

He thanked Nailsea Town Council and the Folk Club for their support of Black History Month over the past four years.

Mr Noah also extended his gratitude to North Somerset Council for their continued support of the rights, interests, welfare, and well-being of racially minoritised ethnic communities in North Somerset.

Nailsea councillor Ben Kushner said: "I would like to give a big shout out to David Francis of the Nailsea Folk Club and his team for doing a brilliant job in signing up Suntou Susso for the Black History event this year.

"It was an amazing night."

Mr Francis added: "We were delighted to hold another Black History Month event at the Tithe Barn in Nailsea.

"The Nailsea Folk Club has a strong reputation for our concert programme which features top names from around the world.

"Over the years the club has become a family of linked activities and projects which develop and change over time.

"We hold most of our concerts in Nailsea Tithe Barn and more traditional folk club nights, including feature nights, at the Ring of Bells in Nailsea which has a lively atmosphere.

"The Nailsea Folk Club welcomes new members.
