NORTH Somerset MP Sadik Al-Hassan has praised the efforts of volunteers at a celebration marking the 75th anniversary of Clevedon Community Centre.

Joining the festivities on Sunday (August 11), the North Somerset MP commended Clevedon’s voluntary groups for their community spirit.

Since 1949, the centre, managed by Clevedon Community Association (CCA), has provided an impressive roster of activities, such as choirs, dance, art, theatre, music and writers' groups, as well as keep fit classes.

The CCA, in partnership with North Somerset Council, has started a £200,000-plus repair and renovation project for the premises.

A new volunteer scheme has been launched to ensure essential maintenance, gardening, hospitality, and office work is well-handled.

During his visit, Mr Al-Hassan spoke with members of various volunteer and community groups that use the facility, including the Gardening Club, the Light Opera Club, the Lit Fest, and the Cruse Bereavement Support organisation.

He also cut the anniversary cake alongside Clevedon North Somerset Council member Cllr Hannah Young.

Reflecting on his visit, Mr Al-Hassan said: "It was inspiring to visit this great amenity, which is at the heart of so much activity that binds the community of Clevedon together.

"I was so impressed by the scale of the wonderful work carried out by so many people who volunteer their time and expertise and who organise a terrific range of events in the town.

"Together, they help to promote a healthy and happy community, building wellbeing and civic pride."
