A CHARITY looking after Marine Lake in Clevedon has received a grant worth more than £90,000 that will improve the sites’ long-term sustainability and accessibility.

MARLENS was awarded a grant of £95,481 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund (Heritage Fund) for the Clevedon Marine Lake – Fit for the Future project.

Thanks to National Lottery players this exciting project will enable the long-term sustainability and accessibility to the lake for a diverse range of users while celebrating its unique heritage.

Built in 1929 and lovingly restored in 2015 (again thanks to Heritage Fund), Clevedon Marine Lake boasts a rich history of community spirit and is vital to Clevedon's seafront heritage, offering a safe and inclusive space for recreation, and community connection.

This funding will enable MARLENS to develop a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting and enhancing the lake's remarkable legacy, embracing its unique heritage while simultaneously making it even more accessible and enjoyable for all.

To achieve this ambitious vision, a dedicated team comprising a part-time business development manager, a part-time volunteering and community engagement officer, and additional administrative support will work alongside Trustees to deliver the project.

With their combined expertise, this team will champion environmental and financial sustainability, foster volunteer engagement, and grow meaningful connections within the community.

Dr Sarah Swash, chair of MARLENS, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to receive this generous support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

“The funding will allow us to realise our ambitious vision for the Lake which contributes so much to people’s physical and mental wellbeing.

“It's a testament to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, staff, and supporters, and we're excited to embark on this transformative journey together.”

Councillor Mike Solomon (executive for Arts and Leisure) from North Somerset Council, who lease the site to MARLENS, added: "North Somerset Council is delighted to see MARLENS secure this significant investment from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

“This funding will safeguard its unique heritage and strengthen its role as a thriving community hub and a key driver of tourism for our region.

“We look forward to seeing this project's positive impact on Clevedon and its residents."

Stuart McLeod, director of England - London & South at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “We are delighted to support this project, which thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, will mean that more people will be able to get involved with, protect, and learn about the exciting heritage right on their doorstep.

“Heritage has a huge role to play in instilling pride in communities and boosting local economies, and this project is a fantastic example of achieving those aims.”
