The Portishead Summer Show will be taking over the town again next weekend with festivities taking place on the 27th and 28th of July.
The show is the oldest and biggest annual community event in Portishead having taken place since 1863 and combines the attractions of a flower and produce show with that of a traditional country fair.
This year’s edition will feature 300 competition classes for pre-school attendees up to senior citizens in the flower and produce show along with attractions, children's activities, trade stalls and refreshments.
Along with everything else there will also be plenty of live entertainment with shows like the Aldabra Giant Tortoises, Mini Ponies, Gundogs, Punch and Judy, Fun Dog Show and Kevin’s Community Circus taking place across the weekend.
Kevin’s circus will also be running circus skills classes for children on Saturday morning before their show.
Plenty of local artistic talent will be on display too, local dances troupes Stepping Stones School of Dance and Aspire School of Dance will be performing and there will be music courtesy of The Chicken Teddies and The Fab Twins.
It costs in excess of £30,000 to run the show and so ticket sales are vital in keeping it running, with the organisers hoping for a big turn out once again, but sponsorships from local people and businesses are also much of the reason for the show’s annual occurrence.
Portishead Rotry sponsor the show’s competition classes whilst contributions from F.H. Halliday’s, Chris Allcock, and Jack of Life:Aligned Chiropractic all help the show go ahead.
A showgoer from 2022 and 2023 said: “I just wanted to say thank you for all the hard work that goes on in the background to make this Show happen.
“It is always the highlight of the first week of the summer holidays, a chilled week with the craft box out for my daughter to use her imagination and to get creative.
“The excitement of the morning to go into the Show tent to see how she has got on it is almost like her face at Christmas.
“Winning a rosette and some money is always a memory my daughter will cherish”
The entry price for a family of two adults and two children booking in advance is £16.00 with free parking. For details on what's on and tickets visit the website here.
