A GROUP of students from North Somerset have won awards in a UK Mathematics Trust competition.
Year 7 and Year 8 students at Clevedon School have broken all their records by winning Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards.
Out of thousands of contestants nationally 60 per cent of the school’s Year 7 and Year 8 students who took part in the UKMT Kangaroo Maths Challenge won an award.
And a record number of six students - Jack, David, Tamim, Cameron, Mya, and Jake - are through to the national finals of the prestigious competition.
Meanwhile, George Kattenbelt, a Year 12 student achieved such an outstanding score that he qualified for the British Olympiad 1st round.
He then did amazingly well, finishing in the Top 50 in the whole of the UK and qualified for the 2nd round of the British Olympiad.
In round two of the British Olympiad, where the threshold for a Distinction was 15+; George scored a phenomenal 23 marks.
Headteacher Jim Smith said: “Massive congratulations to all of the students who took part and did so well.
“This was a record-breaking year and the students also had a lot of fun in their learning.”
The UK Mathematics Trust was founded in 1996 and the aim is to advance the education of young people in mathematics.
