Clevedon Cricket Club have been celebrating their 150th anniversary this year having been founded in 1874 and local poet Peter Gibbs has written a piece to commemorate the occasion. He writes:

“The sound of ball on willow,

Across one, fifty years.

A cricket club here started,

By early pioneers.

Those showing batting prowess.

Those riding on their luck.

Fine centuries all lauded,

Not so each golden duck.

Above the town of Clevedon,

Below tall Dial Hill,

Eager batsmen padding,

Fielders waiting still.

Matches on a knife-edge,

Those too quickly lost,

A moment’s inattention,

An opener pays the cost.

Names that made the annals,

Remembered to this day,

Sons who followed fathers,

Proud to watch them play.

Around the pitch spectators,

In sunshine take their ease,

While back in the pavilion,

The ladies make the teas.”

Peter is a keen poet and often writes about North Somerset and the surrounding area, he has already written pieces about Clevedon Pier, the Marine Lake, and plenty more.
