A PERSON was hospitalised as a result of a vehicle fire which saw the M5 southbound closed from Clevedon to Portbury on Tuesday, May 28.

All lanes on the southbound carriageway were closed between J19 and J20 as a result of the incident, which saw emergency services attend.

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWAST) confirmed one patient was taken to hospital in an ambulance following the fire.

“We were called at 07:28hrs on Tuesday, May 28 to an incident near Portishead," a spokesperson said.

"We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, one tactical commander and a hazardous area response team to the scene and conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Southmead Hospital."

The closure saw standstill traffic spanning from Clevedon to as far north as Avonmouth, before the road eventually reopened at around 11am.

Residual delays reaching four miles long and adding around 40 minutes to regular journey times remained until conditions cleared at around 1pm.
