CREW members from the Avon Fire and Rescue Service were called out earlier today (Thursday, May 23) after a gas main ruptured in Backwell.

A spokesperson from the Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 10:36am to reports of a smell of gas on Station Road, Backwell.

"Crews from Nailsea attended and found a ruptured gas main.

"Firefighters evacuated a number of local residents and have now handed over the incident to the local utilities company.

"Crews have since left the area."

Police also supported the fire service with road closures.

The ruptured gas main has also impacted local students in the area.

Speaking earlier today, a spokesperson from Backwell School said: "There has been a gas leak on Station Road, Backwell (not on school site).

"To be cautious the police have advised us to keep all children in class with the windows closed."
