Clevedon Community Centre has received a £10,000 grant to fund a new fire alarm system.
The money was awarded under the National Grid Electricity Transmission’s Community Grant Programme.
It will help update the centre's alarm system, which was installed in the 1990s, to a more modern wireless system.
Richard Young, chair of Clevedon Community Association said: "Our old fire alarm was installed in the early 1990s, the control panel was in the wrong place and could only be reached by climbing a step-ladder, and the system comprised just two smoke detectors.
"The new one is a modern wireless system with 28 smoke detectors, offering our buildings and users much better protection."
The community centre is run by a registered charity, the Clevedon Community Association.
It is widely relied upon by the community for a variety of services like theatre societies, dance groups, table tennis enthusiasts, the NHS blood transfusion service and many more.
Mr. Young also highlighted how crucial this safety upgrade was for the facility, and appreciated the National Grid for recognising the importance of the work.
This long-awaited safety system was fully operational by the end of January and unveiled by trustees of the centre and Felicity Redgrave, principal of the Bristol School of Dance, a frequent patron of the facility.
