North Somerset Council leaders have called on chancellor Jeremy Hunt to extend The Household Support Fund.

First launched in October 2021, the government's support initiative has dispensed food vouchers, financial assistance for clothing and furniture, and extra help with energy bills.

It became a lifeline for thousands across the South West amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

But, with the scheme set to terminate in March 2024 and no commitment from the government to continue it, uncertainty looms large.

In a bid to extend the scheme, leader of North Somerset Council Cllr Mike Bell and deputy leader Cllr Catherine Gibbons have penned a letter to the Chancellor today.

The Household Support Fund injects around £2.6m annually into the North Somerset community, with over 41,000 different crisis support payments made so far.

Comments from residents who have benefitted from the aid highlight the growing financial despair.

One resident voiced: "I’m a single parent, I’m struggling with everyday bills, having to ask family to help me but they can’t anymore.

"I’m in debt and really struggling."

Others alluded to astronomical rent, escalating energy bills and soaring costs of a simple food shop.

But families aren't the only beneficiaries of the Household Support Fund.

The financial aid extends to children eligible for free school meals, care-experienced young people, and Council Tax Support customers.

Furthermore, the fund empowers partner organisations, including Citizen’s Advice, Salvation Army, fuel banks and local charities, to provide robust support as prices continue their upward trajectory.

Cllr Mike Bell said: "The Household Support Fund has been vital in helping thousands of residents as costs rise.

"The fund has enabled councils like ours to provide financial support suited to the needs of our communities, whether that’s through a cash payment so families can buy the essentials they need, advice to help people access the financial support they are entitled to or through the direct provision of furniture and white goods."

Meanwhile, Deputy Leader Cllr Catherine Gibbons emphasized the difference the funding makes to families and children amidst mounting economic pressures.

She urged the government to continue this support, noting that issues like energy bills, mortgages, and inflation are greatly impacting family budgets.
