Ethan Feltham scored again to help Portishead Town break down a resolute Cheddar defence to secure a 1-0 win in the Toolstation Western League Division One this afternoon (Saturday).
Feltham was able to tuck the ball home into the bottom corner at the second time of asking in the 66th minute to stretch their unbeaten to 19 games.
As for the Cheesemen defeat at Bristol Road was their 10th straight in all competitions.
But in the first half there were chances few and far between for both sides as Cheddar held firm.
When Posset did get through they found captain Kieran Webster in fine form, where he tipped Mitch Osmond’s 25-yard effort round the post as the match went into half-time goalless.
The second half was a different story and within four minutes Portishead were denied by the crossbar.
George Fowler crossed in towards the back post and found Toby Lawrence but the defender saw his header come back off the woodwork.
To Cheddar’s credit they never gave up and found themselves behind Portishead’s defence when Dean Chrisostomou’s long ball found Liam Graham but he could only send his effort wide of the target in the 63rd minute.
And the opening goal duly arrived three minutes later when Feltham picked up the ball on the edge of the box.
He saw his first attempt superbly blocked by Tom Davies before the forward picked up the rebound and fired through a crowd of Cheddar bodies into the bottom corner for his 31st goal of a remarkable season from just 20 games.
The goal opened the game up and the Cheesmen were unfortunate not to level the scores when George Fairchild’s volley from the edge of the box flashed just wide.
Feltham then fired over a free-kick as Portishead went in search for a second and nearly got it in the 84th minute.
A well-worked move found Callum Eastwood at the near post but his shot was cleared off the line by Olie Hucker for a corner. And from the resulting delivery Calum Townsend could only volley just over the bar.
With time running out Cheddar pushed forward for an equaliser and went close to getting it through Chrisostomou, but he could only fire over from the edge of the box.
The final whistle sounded moments later to help Town record their 17th win of the campaign and stretch their lead at top of the table to eight points.
