AVON Fire and Rescue Service (AF&RS) will be holding a recruitment event in Yatton town centre to urge people to consider a career in firefighting.
On Saturday, July 1, residents will be able to learn more about the role. Members of the Avon Fire and Rescue Service will be available from 10.00am until 3.00pm.
As an on-call firefighter, you will be responding to a wide range of incidents, as well as working at open days and working with your local community.
On-call watch manager at Yatton, Martin Thomas, said: “We’re encouraging anyone with an interest in coming and serving with us to get in touch and find out more.
"This is a truly important role in the community and can be extremely rewarding.”
Previous experience in the role isn't included, as training will be given. As such, firefighters can come from all walks of life, including homemakers, shopkeepers, builders, farmers, office workers and directors of companies, together with people who are not currently employed.
On-call firefighters can expect to be called out two or three times a week for a few hours at a time. This is subject to your own availability, meaning that the role can fit around your other commitments.
Here's some of the characteristics you would need to be an on-call firefighter at Yatton. You must:
• Have a strong desire to support the local community
• Be enthusiastic about working as part of a team
• Have a good level of fitness and strength
• Live or/and work within close proximity to Yatton fire station
The AF&RS website states: "We are committed to providing a safer place for people to live, work and visit across an area of 134,753 hectares and a population of over one million.
"While firefighting has traditionally been at the forefront of our work, the role of a modern fire and rescue service has increased to cover the core functions of 'preventing', 'protecting' and 'responding'."
