WHEN we were invited to review Cadbury House’s award-winning Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar and Grill, we imagined stacked plates of succulent steak, chunky chips and tasty cocktails.

We were not disappointed.

Evening meal

On arrival, we were promptly seated. We did ask if there was space to sit in their Garden Room, which had views of rolling hills, but, as can be expected on a hot Friday evening, it was packed.

Complete with white-clothed tables, a piano in the adjoining lounge, low-lighting and chic décor, it was clear from the outset that the staff took pride in the cleanliness and upkeep of the restaurant.

As for the staff themselves, they were all dressed in trousers and clean, white shirts; for them, it seemed that ironing their clothes was a daily routine.

It was difficult to decide what to drink – wine or a cocktail? We eventually settled on cocktails. I tried the strawberry mojito, whilst my partner indulged in a strawberry daquiri. Both were presented with a strawberry on the rim of the glass, and both tantalised the tastebuds.

As part of the hotel’s generous offer to us, we were able to choose three courses from a set menu. 

To start, I went for the calamari. It was everything you want calamari to be; crispy and hot. My partner went for Mr White’s scotch egg, complete with colonel mustard sauce.

For mains, I went for a sirloin steak, cooked medium rare. Complete with tomatoes, chunky chips and a delicious peppercorn sauce, I was soon scraping my plate clean. Meanwhile, my companion enjoyed the escalope of pork alla milanese. I did sneak a bite of this, and, whilst it was tasty, I thought it was nothing compared to my own meal. It seemed that he did have a bit of food envy, but still enjoyed his meal nonetheless.

On the side, we also enjoyed a portion of macaroni and cheese. Commenting on this, my partner said: “It was nice, but the sauce is too thin, I prefer mine to be thicker.” To this, I must agree.

To finish, I had the cheesecake, which was delicious. My partner attempted to eat a very generous portion of apple and almond crumble, but, by this point, we were starting to get stuffed!

All in all, there was very little wrong with our evening dining experience at Cadbury House’s Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar and Grill. If you are planning on dining there, I definitely recommend the steak, but, if that’s not your thing, the fish and chips also looked amazing.

Breakfast

We ate breakfast early, at around 7.30am. The hotel starts breakfast at 7am on weekends for the early risers. 

This time, we managed to get a table in the Garden Room – in fact, we were the only ones in there. The waiter explained that it was a continental breakfast, with Full English Options from the buffet.

On the menus which were on the table, there was mention of supplements, such as eggs benedict, which were included in the Full English Option. We settled for making our own Full English from the buffet.

I went for what I hoped would be warm, crispy hash browns, a sausage, tomato, and scrambled eggs. Whilst the food was tasty, it was a shame that the hash browns and eggs were only lukewarm.

My partner got a similar dish, but added bacon, mushrooms and black pudding. Likewise, his food could have been hotter.

If we were to stay next time, we both agreed we would stick to the pastries and toast.
