COUNCIL services will be affected by the Queen's funeral next week after Monday was confirmed as a national bank holiday.

Refuse collections will be suspended, and libraries and other leisure centres will also close on Monday, September 19.

North Somerset Council says it has taken the decision to withdraw services to 'enable the focus of the day to be on paying respect to Her Majesty'.

Schools across the district will close too, as will many shops and businesses, including McDonald's and various food banks.

Hospital appointments, including some oncology procedures, have also been postponed.

A national two-minute silence is arranged for Sunday, September 18, at 8pm.

The state funeral will take place on Monday, and will be broadcast live by the BBC.

Leisure centres

Backwell will open from 7am to 10.30am and again from 3.30pm to 9pm.

Hutton Moor will open from 6.30am to 10.30am, and from 4pm to 9.30pm.

Parish Wharf is to close all-day.

Scotch Horn will also open from 6.30am to 10.30am, and from 4pm to 9pm.

Strode Road will stay closed all-day.

Libraries

The Campus, in Worle, will close all-day. As will all other council libraries.

Refuse collection

All three recycling centres in the district - at Backwell, Portishead and Weston - will also close all-day.

If a usual collection falls on a Monday, revised arrangments will be made.

Households due a black bin waste collection or a garden waste collection next week should place their containers out a day later than normal.

Collections will be made from Tuesday to Saturday.

Recycling and food waste collections will take place on the normal collection days except for households due a collection on Monday.

These households should place their containers out the following week on Monday, September 26.
