A CANCER patient from Clevedon has signed up to be a marshal at the Bristol Half Marathon .
In January Fran Edwards, along with her best friend Sarah Godfrey also from Clevedon, signed up for the Bristol 10k to raise money for Penny Brohn Cancer Care in Pill in memory of Sarah’s mother who died from pancreatic cancer in 2012.
Halfway through their training Fran was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and began treatment straight away. Despite this, while in the middle of her chemotherapy, she completed the race around Bristol City Centre with Sarah by her side.
Thanks to the fact the cheering crowds really spurred Fran on, she has decided to volunteer as a Penny Brohn Cancer Care marshal at this month’s Bristol Half Marathon which takes place on September 21.
The charity, which is based in Chapel Pill Lane, provides complementary care for cancer patients and has been chosen as one of the main half marathon charities.
Fran said: “It was a huge shock being diagnosed with breast cancer.
“The support we had from the marshals [during the 10k race] was absolutely amazing. They really helped us get round. That is why I’m volunteering at the half marathon.”
