Anyone who wishes to use a North Somerset Council-run recycling and waste centre will have to take ID with them.

The council planned to introduce residents’ permits to stop drivers who live outside of the district from dumping rubbish at their centres in Backwell, Portishead and Weston.

However, this idea, which the council in March said would reduce waiting times at tips, has been scrapped.

A council spokesman said: “We felt the introduction of resident permits was overly complicated so have decided not to introduce them.

“Instead we will be carrying out spot-checks and would urge anyone using the recycling centres to carry identification that shows that they live in North Somerset.

“This could include a driving licence or council tax bill.”
