One of the darkest times in North Somerset history will be explored in an expert talk for a Yatton group later this month.
John Penny will speak on The Bombing Of Weston for Yatton Men’s Society on January 29.
As few will remember, Weston suffered extensive damage at the hands of German bombers in World War Two, including a devastating two-night blitz on June 28 and 29 in 1942.
On those nights, the town endured what survivors described as ‘hell on earth’ as 52 high-explosive bombs and more than 10,000 savage incendiary devices were dropped upon the town.
Large parts of the town centre and outlying residential areas were destroyed in that 48-hour period, while more than 100 people were killed and hundreds more were injured.
Mr Penny’s talk will take place at the Methodist Church in High Street, and is scheduled to begin at 10.30am.
